Photo of the Week – One Last Bloom

This week’s Photo of the Week is all about one last burst of colour from the wildflowers in my backyard. By rights, they should not be blooming now. But I planted these late and somehow, they managed to grow and bloom. It’s been a difficult, dull, grey, rainy and chilly week and these flowers were like an oasis of colour in a brown and grey desert.

Photo of the Week – Deer In Golden Light

This week’s Photo of the Week is about that magical golden light that only seems to occur in early spring and late fall. The really spectacular shows of this warm, golden light are rare, but when they do happen, you really hope you have your camera nearby. Magical and spectacular are the only ways to describe it.

Photo of the Week – Lensbaby Maple Leaves

This week’s Photo of the Week is focused on fall colours again (who can resist?!), but with a twist. I used a Lensbaby to make this image. I love the way it distorts portions of the image and can spice up a ‘pattern’ shot, but creating a vignette of distortion and splotches of colour. I love what the Lensbaby does to trees and so this time of year is my favourite to swap the zoom lens for the Lensbaby and get out into the forest. For this image, I used a medium-aperture insert (sorry, no real f-stop is associated with the inserts you use to manipulate depth of field or in this case, more accurately, the portion of the image in focus) to ensure that enough of the image was in focus and that only the margins of the image would be distorted.

If you own a Lensbaby, I hope you get out before the fall colours disappear. They really are a lot of fun to play with.

Photo of the Week – Autumn Sunshine

This week’s Photo of the Week is one of my favourites. I love the lighting in this image that I took while walking through the forest in Marten River Provincial Park in Ontario. When I look at it, I can still feel the warmth of the sunshine hitting my face as we walked.

The colours in this image also remind me of harvest – brown, orange, rust – and so I thought it was a fitting image with which to wish my Canadian followers a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving and all the best from 44th Parallel Photography.

Lanark County Colours

Today I spent part of the day driving around Lanark County, where I live, and into North Frontenac County, here in Ontario. This year’s show of fall colours has been nothing short of spectacular. Because of our drought this summer, it was predicted that the fall colours would be far more muted than usual. In fact, this fall has been just the opposite, with some of the most vibrant colours in years!

Nothing soothes the soul more than driving along a quiet country road, soaking in the vibrant colours of fall. Here are some photos from today’s outing.

Wishing all of you here in Canada, a Happy Thanksgiving. Take a moment to reflect on the things you are grateful for, especially the people you love most. And cherish every moment with them.

Photo of the Week – Muted Colours of Autumn

Saturday was a grey, dreary day of torrential rain. After our summer drought we needed it to make up for the little we’d had in the past 3 months, but it didn’t have to come all in one day! As you can imagine, it was a tad ‘damp’ outside and neither me nor my camera gear would have been happy out there. So instead, we brought a little bit of nature inside to photograph.

This week’s Photo of the Week is of some dead ferns in our backyard. Each fall these once vibrant green ferns take on the muted browns and greys of fall. To me, the absence of colour focuses the eye more on texture and lines and so these images have a certain beauty of their own.
